OPTIMAT® for corrosion resistance

Surfacing veils are used extensively in the production of FRP products used in corrosive environments e.g. pipes, tanks and process vessels. A typical construction of a GRP pipe might be a veil reinforced inner liner of corrosion resistant resin typically 0.25 - 0.5mm thick, a chopped fibre corrosion barrier followed by the structural laminate.

An external resin rich layer is often applied again the thickness controlled by the use of a surfacing veil.

Technical Fibre Products manufacture a range of products for use in this industry.

C glass veil with a variety of organic binders for compatibility with all major resin systems

Low cost high tensile strength synthetic veils manufactured using polyester or PAN fibres for enhanced corrosion resistance in acidic environments and for outer pipe wraps
Coloured polyester veils for colour coding of FRP fabrications
Carbon veils manufactured using PAN and pitch based carbon fibres for ultimate corrosion resistance in the most aggressive environments can also be used for electrical conductivity and thermal management in high temperature applications
Blends of glass or polyester fibres with carbon for combined corrosion protection and static dissipation
Carbon fibre tapes for in-situ testing of welds in thermoplastic tank liners
OPTIMAT® surfacing veils, manufactured using our unique wet laid processing technique are proven to give excellent fibre distribution and localised basis weight control with no light or heavy patches. Availability with binders either soluble or insoluble in the major resin systems, OPTIMAT® surfacing veils are suitable for winding and hand lay up methods of application.
Benefits include:

Even surface coverage

Close control of thickness of resin rich layer
Even resin wet out with no dry spots
High resin compatibility
High wet tensile strength with insoluble binders
Good conformability with soluble binders
Good dimensional stability and resistance to necking
